Miracle Stitch

On the 12th December I'm going to meet some special ladies and their even more special babies!
I belong to a group of women in the UK who have had or are waiting for, an operation called the TAC (Transabdominal Cerclage.) The operation unfortunately necessary as they have already lost two or more babies possibly due to an incompetent cervix, usually during the second trimester between thirteen and twenty-eight weeks.
The TAC is a permanent stitch placed at the top of the cervix through an incision much like the caesarian section. which can be done either before or during pregnancy.  The stitch holds the cervix tightly closed throughout, ensuring the pregnancy reaches full term, and because it is permanent a caesarian section is necessary, usually a couple of weeks before the baby is due.
There are other cervical stitches which are more well known but they only have something like a 75% success rate, these are generically called TVC or transvaginal cerclage.
The success rate for the TAC is 95% and the procedure is only available at specialist hospitals such as Liverpool Women's.   My consultant told me about the TAC in 1999 just after I lost my second baby so I was glad to have had that information when I visited my GP in 2011.  So many people have still never heard of this miracle procedure but slowly the word is spreading.   I am incredibly lucky to have been able to have this operation after losing baby boys at twenty-two and fifteen weeks.  Now I have my rainbow baby who is two years old.
